西郷南洲記念館から徒歩一分の場所に、西郷隆盛の人柄を偲んで1901年に建てられました。鹿児島市内にも同名の神社がありますが、沖永良部の南洲神社には、上野の西郷さんを模した、ツンを連れたほぼ等身大の立像があります。神社には駐車場がありませんが、西郷南洲記念館に車をとめることができます。
