藤川天神は学問の神様・菅原道真が祭神です。太宰府天満宮と同じく、受験シーズンには多くの受験生が合格祈願に神社を訪れます。
また、道真が植えたとされる梅が繁殖し、例年、2月中旬から3月上旬が見ごろです。約300本のうち55本は、幹が地上に伏した形状をして竜のように見えるため「臥竜梅(がりゅうばい)」と呼ばれ、国の天然記念物に指定されています。
西郷隆盛の愛犬として有名なツンの銅像もあります。
