昭和16年6月、沖縄への派遣兵士4600人余りが乗った「富山丸」が亀徳沖合3kmの海上で撃沈されて3700人余りの兵士が戦死しました。
その3か月後の9月、今度は本土への疎開船「武州丸」に乗った徳之島の婦女子160人余りが十島村付近で潜水艦の攻撃を受けて亡くなりました。
その2つの慰霊碑が向き合うようにして建っている公園です。
