串良平和公園はかつて串良航空隊の航空基地があったところで戦没者慰霊塔が公園の中に建てられています。昭和20年3月1日から特別攻撃隊の基地となり終戦までの半年間に多くの若者が飛び立ちました。
昭和46年春、串良町から関西に移り住んだ出身者の方々によって、東西南北3キロメートルにわたり約1200本の桜が植樹され、現在では大隅半島屈指の桜の名所となっています。
