島津20代藩主、綱貴公のころの薩摩藩の薬園跡 です。
遠く南洋等から薬草を輸入し、幕末まで医学の研究を試みたと伝えられています。
園内にはリュウガン、レイシ、 オオバゴムノキ、アカテツ、ガジュマル等、当時としては珍しい植物や薬草が栽培された 場所で国指定の史跡となっています。
