創建は不明ですがニニギノミコトが霧島に降臨した後、しばらく宮居されたと言われる場所です。明るい赤塗と彫刻の美しい宮で、古事記に記されている貝のモニュメントもあり、毎年元旦に吹上浜の砂を盛った貝をお供えします。
境内には、樹齢800年を超える大楠(千本楠)があり、11月には「流鏑馬」を奉納します。
境内はバリアフリーで車いすでも動きやすいです。
