山宮神社は709年に創建されたといわれています。
毎年2月の第2土曜日・日曜日に県の無形民俗文化財に指定されている伝統行事が行われ、1.5キロメートル離れた安楽神社と合同で2日間かけて豊作を祝います。
鳥居の右側に立つ日本一枝ぶりが美しいとされる「志布志の大クス」は、国指定天然記念物になっています。
