1549年、イスパニアの宣教師フランシスコ・ザビエルは鹿児島の祇園之洲に上陸し、日本にキリスト教をはじめ、さまざまな異文化を伝えました。
ザビエルの功績を讃えて建てたザビエル教会は第2次世界大戦で焼失しましたが、その石造りの旧聖堂の一部とザビエルの胸像がザビエル公園内に残されています。
