対幕府交渉のさなか島津久光の怒りを買った西郷隆盛は、沖永良部島に流刑となり、決して開けてはならぬと牢込めにされました。牢は貧弱で、西郷は健康を害しました。この西郷南洲記念館は、当地で牢居した際、「敬天愛人」の思想のもと地域の子弟の教育に尽力した、西郷の遺徳を偲んで建てられました。記念館には格子牢が再現されています。
