西南戦争最後の激戦地「城山」で、銃弾に倒れるまで最後の5日間を過ごしたとされる。西郷隆盛が最後まで薩軍の指揮をとっていた場所として重要な史跡です。
明治10年（1877年）年2月、西南戦争において鹿児島城下を出発した薩軍は、九州各地で転戦したのち、8月に解散。その後西郷隆盛の一行は九州の山間地を越えて鹿児島を目指し、9月1日、再び城下に戻り、桐野利秋をはじめ私学校の幹部たちとともに城山に立て籠もりました。
