慶長16（1611）年に垂水島津家第4代島津久信によって建築された「林之城」の関連施設として建てられたものです。
約400年の間、数度の火災にも無事に残った貴重な建物で、長屋としては県内唯一の遺構といわれており、垂水小学校の校門脇に当時のままの姿で、民具資料館として保存されています。
垂水市にとって「将軍地蔵」「柊原貝塚出土品」に続いて3つ目の鹿児島県指定文化財となります。
