文久2年（1862年）島津久光の命に背いた西郷隆盛は、徳之島からさらに薩摩藩の最重罪人流謫の島であった沖永良部島に流され、伊延港に着きました。その上陸した場所に石碑が建っています。西郷は藩の役人から乗馬を勧められましたが、「もういつ土を踏めるか分からないので歩かせて欲しい」とそれを断り、約4km離れた牢まで歩いて移動しました。バリアフリートイレが整備されています。
